Talk Break

A segment of an on-air show where the host talks between songs, spots, or features — as opposed to music or commercials.

A talk break is any stretch of a broadcast where the host is speaking rather than playing music or running a spot. On music stations, breaks are usually short — a few seconds to a minute — and sit at fixed points in the hour so the format stays consistent.

Strong breaks do one thing well: a single relatable thought, a local reference, or a setup for what is coming next. Breaks that try to cover three topics at once tend to lose the listener, which is why most air talent prep and tighten them before going on.
